Quarantine fatique got the better of us in early June 2020 – we planned a getaway to the Keys – Fiesta Key RV Resort – thus not leaving the state but changing the scenery.
We departed Winter Haven on June 25 after giving the motorcoach a bath and stowing our supplies for our two week adventure. It felt so good to be on the road again and in the motorcoach. It’s true – retired people can go on vacation – even during a pandemic.
Monroe County turned out to be the safest place we could choose – masks are required in public everywhere and social distancing is being observed throughout the county.
It is very hot here and humid – 89 feels like 103 degrees – but it’s summer in Florida, people! 100 degrees yes but at the seacoast it is better than 100 degrees inland. First few days we had strong winds which have died down a bit. We’ve been in the pool which is monitored by staff and there are specific time slots and cleaning breaks so comply with county precaution requirements.
We have had two great meals already – at two different restaurants – The Square Grouer and Kaiyo Grille in Islamorada, where we felt very safe due to the precautions taken by both of the management companies. Honestly we feel safer here than back in Winter Haven where we saw a lot of non compliance regarding mask wearing and social distancing. Every store, restaurant, and shop has signs saying “No mask, No service” so we are delighted we choose to visit here in Monroe County at this time. We will stay another week to enjoy this lovely respite.
Here are some photos of the Resort and Marina on Long Key near Layton, Florida.
The Resort’s restaurant and bar are not open much to our dismay but we brought plenty of food and liquor. Also we returned to our favorite bagel shop – Marathon Bagel Company – to stock up on the best bagels south of New York. We tried a sushi place for the first time – Kaiyo Grille and had a fabulous 28th anniversary dinner – we hope to go back before we leave here. We celebrated Rick’s birthday at The Square Grouper and had a terrific three course dinner with cocktails, wine and dessert!
We bought more beautiful wooden fishes painted by a local artist at the Rain Barrel Galleries to finish decorating our lanai back home as well as the appropriate bar sign.
A view I never tire of……. ocean on one side Gulf on the others ….
